have been banned under emergency suspension when EPA released its preliminary
risk assessment in 1999, EPA allows industry an 18th month “phase-out”
period of sales and distribution of existing stocks for the spray forumulation.
Existing stocks in the hands of persons other than the registrant can
be distributed, sold, or used legally until they are exhausted. Docket

Tolerance . The Industry Task Force II has petitioned the
EPA with new data to remove the expiration date of 12/31/04 for 2,4-D
in or on raw soybean seed at 0.02 parts per million (ppm). The petition
is being worked into the current risk assessment review process of the

- Rodenticides.
Revised comparative ecological risk assessment and related documents
are available for zinc phosphide and the rodenticide cluster (brodifacoum,
bromadiolone, bromethalin, chlorophacinone, and diphacinone), as well
as three other rodenticides, warfarin, difethialone, and cholecalciferol.
Documents include EPA's response to comments on the preliminary risk

- Captan
Amended RED; Cancer Classification Changed. The fungicide captan currently
is used to control diseases on orchard crops, ornamentals, and turf,
and also is used for seed treatments and as an in-can preservative in
adhesives and paint. Until recently captan was classified as a probable
human carcinogen (B2). The Agency's new conclusion is that captan is
a potential carcinogen only at prolonged high doses that are greater
than those likely to be consumed in the diet or encountered in occupational
or residential settings. The Agency has concluded that captan is not
likely to be a human carcinogen or to pose cancer risks of concern when

- MCPA
Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) available for comment. MCPA
(4-chloro-2- methylphenoxyacetic acid) is a phenoxy herbicide typically
used in formulation with other phenoxy class chemicals, such as 2,4-D,
2,4-DB, MCPP-p, and MCPB. MCPA is used for control of broadleaf weeds
on several food and feed crops. It is also used on grass grown for seed,
turf, lawns, vines, rights-of-way, and in forestry. Docket ID# OPP-2004-0239.

- Thiophanate-methyl
RED Available. Thiophanate-methyl is a fungicide registered for use
on a variety of agricultural food and feed crops. There are also non-food/feed
use sites such as golf courses, sod farms, greenhouses and nurseries.
Thiophanate-methyl also has registered residential uses on lawns, ornamental

Interim Reregistration (IRED) available. Carbaryl, a N-methyl carbamate
insecticide, is used on agricultural crops, sod, and for residential
use on pets and in homes and gardens, and by USDA for grasshopper control.
Because the carbamate pesticides share a common mechanism of toxicity,
the Agency will evaluate the cumulative risk posed by this group before
making final reregistration eligibility decisions on the individual

Reassessment (2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin,
TCDD) by National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The first meeting of the

is to review the uncertainty and variability associated with risk assessment,
including, for example, the dose-response curve and points of departure.
The committee will identify gaps in scientific knowledge that are critical
to understanding dioxin reassessment.

Industry Sales and Usage: 2000 and 2001 Market Estimates Available.
The newly released report contains the latest estimates of pesticide
use in the U.S. and includes information on agricultural and nonagricultural
pesticide use and illustrates graphically historical trends and levels

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) plant-incorporated protectant in cotton
conditionally approved for use by EPA (Wide strike®) until Sept.
30, 2009. WideStrike® cotton is a Dow AgroSciences product.
- Cancellations
for Creosote Wood Preservative Products is December 31, 2004. Cancellation
orders were signed on August 11, 2004. Cancellations will result in
either cancellation of use products or amendments to current label language
to delete non-pressure treatment uses of creosote effective December
31, 2004. The Agency is not allowing for any for those products in the
hands of on the effective date of the cancellation. The registrant has
no existing stocks provisions but existing stocks already in the hands
of persons other than the registrant can be distributed, sold, or used
legally until they are exhausted. (9/04)
- Cancellation
of Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) Use effective December 31, 2004
will terminate any use where “members out of water and not subject
to salt water [or brackish water] splash, and not in soil use.”
CCA wood that is subject to salt water or brackish water splash (frequent
wetting from waves) can still be used as can the submersion of the wood
for marine construction. (9/04)
- 1992
Pesticide Worker Protection Standard Amended effective on November
1, 2004 to permit optional use of separable glove liners beneath chemical-resistant
gloves. This amendment also makes optional the provision that agricultural
pilots wear gloves when entering or leaving aircraft. EPA believes that
these changes will reduce the cost of compliance and will increase regulatory

- Benfluralin;
Availability of Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED). Herbicide
used to control weeds in turf and ornamental plants, nonbearing fruit

gaps and confirmatory data needs are addressed; the risk mitigation
measures outlined in the RED are adopted; and label amendments are made
