California
Safe Schools, a coalition of over 50 organizations, was established
in 1998 by California Safe Schools, a coalition of over 50 organizations,
was established in 1998 by Robina Suwol, after Robina's sons and
other students were sprayed with pesticides. In 1999, one year from
the date of spraying, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD),
the 2nd largest district in the nation, unanimously adopted the
most stringent pesticide policy in the nation for schools. The policy
was the first in the United States to embrace the Precautionary
Principle and Parents Right to Know . This grassroots effort later
led to the California Healthy Schools Act 2000 legislation. Today
California Safe Schools helps others around the state with school
chemical use issues and is vigilant in watch dogging the LAUSD policy
implementation. California Safe Schools is a member of the School
Pesticide Reform Coalition.
