Photo Stories

May 3, 2002 - This week's photo story features pictures taken at the 20th National Pesticide Forum, Streams to Schools: Finding Alternatives to Pesticides, in Seattle, WA. The Forum was very educational and inspiring and Beyond Pesticides thanks everyone that helped make the event such a great success. If you weren't able to join us in Seattle, hopefully we'll see you next spring at the 21st National Pesticide Forum!

Full Circle Farm owner Andrew Stout explains organic farming on the Friday afternoon tour

The forum began with a tour of Carl Sandburg Elementary in Kirkland, WA, a school that has recently eliminated the use of toxic pesticides. Both the parent activists that worked to pass the policy banning toxic pesticides and the pest management professionals doing the least-toxic pest management talked about their role in the process. The group then moved on to Full Circle Organic Farm in Carnation, WA, which featured a restored salmon stream.

PR Watch executive director John Stauber takes questions after his talk

Nationally known speakers such as national radio commentator and author Jim Hightower, University of Florida professor Louis Guillette, Tulane and Xavier Universities visiting scholar Elizabeth Guillette, Duke University professor Mohammed Abou-Donia, Canadian farmer sued by Monsanto Percy Schmeiser and PR Watch executive director and author John Stauber made presentations to a packed auditorium of activists, scientists and community leaders. If you would like a video of any of the presentations, please contact Beyond Pesticides to place an order. For a list of presentations, see the Forum program.

Percy Schmeiser discusses his legal battle with Monsanto with a Forum participant

The Forum serves as a venue for new and seasoned activists to network and discuss issues, strategies, struggles and victories around the country. This year's event featured participants from 24 different states and two Canadian provinces.
