What
is your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? |
IPM is using
the least toxic approach at key times. Cultural practices employed
instead of herbicides or any other pesticides. IPM is knowing what
plant material is on your sites and what it is susceptible to (insects
or diseases). |
Is pest management performed on a specific schedule? |
Yes, according
to temperatures, weather patterns and "growing degree days." |
How
are pest problems identified? |
Identification
is made using visual inspection and record keeping of site maps
from previous years. |
What practices
do you use to prevent and/or control pests? |
Cultural, mechanical
and environmental options are used before applications. |
Do you
use biological controls? |
Do you
use synthetic chemicals? |
Synthetic chemicals
are used only when the property is labeled as a worst case senario
or on a "break out" at a new site. These might include Tempo
(cyfluthrin), 2,4-D for spot treatments or Confront (Triclopyr) for
spot treatments. We also use horticultural soaps and oils. |
What
are the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend? |
Horticultural
soaps, horticultural oils and healthy, vigorous plant material. |
If pesticides are used, how much are used per year of each? |
As little as
possible to specific plants that need treatment. No broadcast spraying. |
Does
your company perform habitat modification? |
Yes. Re-designing:
change poor lighting or drainage. Thinning out, pruning and installing
plant material. |
Do you
use any physical or mechanical controls? |
Pruning, arborest
work and hand removal of egg sacks. |
What
type of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend? |
Organic, polycoated,
sulfur coated and slow release fertilizers. |
What
do you usually use/sell/recommend for addressing: |
termites |
Did Not
Respond (DNR) |
crabgrass |
Spot treatments. |
How do
you evaluate effectiveness of your pest management |

program, Cook College; Mr. Bob Way, Rutgers Extension Center. |
