IIPM of Alaska uses only non-toxic (natural, organic, biological and non-toxic IPM methods) for controlling pests in Alaska. We specialize in greenhouse pest management, non-toxic carpenter ant control, non-toxic rodent control and non-toxic bat exclusions.

What is your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

IPM is a pest management strategy that uses all control options available that provides the most successful control with the least harm to the environment. Knowledge of pest life cycles, sanitation practices, and habitat modification are all a part of IPM.

Is pest management performed on a specific schedule?

Pest monitoring/scouting is done regularly. Release of biological controls (beneficial organisms) is done on a schedule for control of greenhouse pests (spider mites, white flies, etc.)

How are pest problems identified?

Monitoring is done regularly using sticky traps, visual inspections, plant inspections, and using pheromone traps when monitoring for stored products or pantry pests. Pest counts are taken and compared to established tolerance levels.

What practices do you use to prevent and/or control pests?

Screening of air intakes, plant quarantine, inspection of shipments (greenhouse pests), caulking and exclusion methods (structural pests)

Do you use biological controls?

Yes. Nematodes (stignernema spp.), encarsia, aphidius, chrysoperia, hypoaspis, phytosieiius, amblysiesus, trichogramma

Do you use borates?

We will use borax (Twenty Mule Team) to control ants.

Do you use synthetic chemicals?

No.

What are the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend?

None are sold or recommended. We use diatomaceous earth (D.E.), as our main pesticide.

If pesticides are used, how much are used per year of each?

None

Does your company perform habitat modification?

Yes. Weed control around exterior of structures using mechanical weed removal to prevent pests indoors.

Do you use any physical or mechanical controls?

Vacuums to physically remove yellow jacket nests and carpenter ant nests. Tanglefoot barriers to prevent ants, crawling pests, etc.

What type of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend?

Alaska Fish Fertilizer

What do you usually use/sell/recommend for addressing:

termites N/A (not in Alaska)

cockroaches Vacuums, sanitation

fleas D.E.

carpenter ants Vacuum nest

fire ants N/A

ants (indoor) Caulking

crabgrass N/A

dandelions Boiling water, vinegar
