Landscape
Dynamics & Organic Garden Care Services/ The Hendrikus Group offers
full service organic garden care, from award-winning environmental
landscape design and installation to all organic maintenance and pest
/ disease control. Hendrikus is a forerunner in the use of microbial
activators, an originator in the development of compost tea used for
landscaping, and the pioneer of Integrated Organic Management.™ |
| |
|
|
What is
your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? |
|
We use an approach we call IOM™
or Integrated Organic Management™. IPM allows the use of synthetics
or chemicals in addition to organics, which we do not. IOM™
utilizes or integrates only truly organic products, including fertilizers,
micro nutrients, biological catalysts, essential oils, activators,
activately aerated compost tea based on a solid approach that gives
prime attention to soil health and disease immunity through plant
health. |
|
Is pest
management performed on a specific schedule? |
|
Our IOM™ approach adapts in response
to the health of a project. Our program covers conditions from extreme
stress with specific treatments and more frequent visits, to basic
seasonal service to sustain healthy gardens. “Pest management”
in landscape applications is minimal when soil and plants are in a
state of health. |
| |
|
|
How are
pest problems identified? |
|
What practices
do you use to prevent and/or control pests? |
|
Foremost we bring soil and plants into
a state of health, meaning that the nutrient and biological mechanisms
for pathogen resistance and nutrient uptake are fully functional as
well as having the right plant in the right place. When that happens
there are naturally fewer pests and less disease. As a secondary measure,
if needed while developing optimum soil and plant health, we use specific
biological, essential oil and cultural controls. |
|
Do you
use biological controls? |
|
Yes. We use wide spread soil food web
solutions like actively aerated compost teas for both soil and foliar
applications along with biologic and microbial controls for specific
purposes such a de-toxifying hydrocarbons from soil. We also use worms,
beneficial nematodes, and other beneficial predators. |
|
Do you
use synthetic chemicals? |
|
No. Furthermore, when treating a property
that has used synthetic chemicals, we immediately begin restoring
soil health with microbial and biological catalysts that break down
toxic particles and help restore soil and foliar biology. |
| |
|
|
What are
the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend? |
|
We use NO pesticides. We do use natural
products that are EPA exempt due to their safety and include ingredients
such as vinegar, clove oil, cedar oil, hot pepper wax, which are very
effective insect killers and deterrents. We sell and recommend St.
Gabriel Laboratories products and Cedarcide products. |
| |
|
|
If pesticides are used, how much are used per year of each? |
|
We use NO pesticides. As for our natural
products we only need to use them sparingly as the results of balancing
soils and bringing natural health to plants is an effective pest and
disease deterrent in itself. |
| |
|
|
Does your
company perform habitat modification? |
|
Yes. We design, consult, and physically
restore habitat environments - from residential yards, landslides
and erosion, wetlands and riparian environments, to diverse urban
situations such as green roofs, parks, streetscapes, etc. |
| |
|
|
Do you
use any physical or mechanical controls? |
|
Yes. Depending on the problem we physically
amend and/or replace soils as well as perform transplanting, fertilization,
weeding and grubbing, aeration, tilling, drainage work, etc. |
| |
|
|
What type
of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend? |
|
We now market the highly effective organic
fertilizer blends that we have used in our landscape installations
for over 15 years, under the Hendrikus Organics label. They are USDA
approved organic and safe for organic food production. |

|
How do
you evaluate effectiveness of your pest management |
|
Our installations have the benefit of
our soils and organic approach from the beginning. They are virtually
disease and pest free. We maintain them on our all organic maintenance
program to ensure their continued health and balance.
For other properties we start our program with soil nutrient testing
and site evaluation and adapt a program that suits the needs of that
landscape. As we build soil and plant health, we continue to monitor
results, growth rates, yields, and perform annual soil nutrient testing. |
