Grassroot Organics is a plant healthcare company focusing on the "soil first' and "right plant in the right place" concepts through the use of true organic land care principles. Grassroot Organics is a member of the Ecological Landscaping Association (ELA), the U.S. Composting Council, the Mid-Atlantic Composting Association, and the Delaware Nursery and Landscape Association (DNLA). What is your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

A process consisting of the balanced use of cultural and biological procedures that are environmentally compatible to reduce pest populations to tolerable levels.

 

Is pest management performed on a specific schedule?

Scouting is done on a monthly basis. Insect populations and disease infestations are monitored through traps and indicator cards. Abnormal environmental conditions may require additional site visits.

How are pest problems identified?

Visual indentification.

What practices do you use to prevent and/or control pests?

Visual indentifications, biological controls, and resistant plant varieties

 

Do you use biological controls?

Natural dormant oil, beneficial nematodes, garlic oil, neem, compost, and Bt.

 

Do you use borates?

No.

Do you use synthetic chemicals?

Only during the transition program from chemical to organic maintenance.

What are the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend?

Scythe (organic herbicide), Corn Gluten Meal (organic pre-emergent), BT, diatomaceous earth, soaps, Garlic oil.

Does your company perform habitat modification?

Yes. Pruning, removals, and transplanting, along with the introduction of resistant and improved species.

Do you use any physical or mechanical controls?

Aeration, overseeding, dethatching, topdressing with compost, hand weeding, foliar washes.

What type of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend?

The blend of organic fertilizers and amendments used are based soley on the chemical and biological soil tests.
