Bell
Environmental is a national pest control company leading the industry
in utilizing innovative technology instead of dangerous pesticides
to attain total pest elimination. |
| |
|
|
What is
your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? |
|
IPM incorporates regular inspections,
monitoring, pest identification and infestation evaluations to create
pest free facilities. |
|
Is pest
management performed on a specific schedule? |
|
Yes,
we perform regular inspections so as to keep problems from occurring. |
| |
|
|
How are
pest problems identified? |
|
We have an extensive monitoring system
that is implemented both before and after controls are implemented,
so as to adjust and use appropriate action levels. |
| |
|
|
What practices
do you use to prevent and/or control pests? |
|
Dessicants, silica gels, vacuuming, hot
water and freezing manipulation, sealents, boric acid and climate
control. |
|
Do you
use biological controls? |
|
We currently only use one biological agent,
called Draingel. This product in poured into floor drains and helps
prevent drain flies from breeding in the drains. The biologicals in
this material feed on the gelatinous film that often collects on drain
pipes and is used by drain fly larvae as a breeding medium. |
|
The borate we use is Perma dust. This
is a pressurized 35.5% boric
acid dust. We apply this to cracks and crevices to eliminate insects. |
| |
|
|
Do you
use synthetic chemicals? |
|
What are
the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend? |
|
The most common pesticides we use are
Drione (amorphous silica
gel), Perma dust (35.5% boric
acid), MaxForce (Fipronil
bait
for roaches and ants) Tempo Ultra (cyfluthrin - broad-spectrum insecticide
used on exterior of buildings), Weatherblok XT (brodifacoum,
a rodenticide used on the outside of structures). |
| |
|
|
If pesticides are used, how much are used per year of each? |
|
Quantities of pesticides used are provided
to our state DEP agency and are not for public dissemination. A more
telling figure is the number of insect monitors we use each year.
In 2003, our company used approximately 450,000 insect monitors in
our client's facilities. The use of these traps greatly reduces the
amount of pesticides applied in any given account. |
| |
|
|
Does your
company perform habitat modification? |
|
Yes. Eliminating standing water is a good
example of habitat modification. In our part of the country West Nile
Virus is a major concern. Control involves eliminating the standing
water that mosquitoes breed in. Identifying topographical areas where
water is likely to pool and collect, or providing adequate drainage
in exterior flower pots, ect go a long way in providing mosquito control. |
| |
|
|
Do you
use any physical or mechanical controls? |
|
Yes. Exclusion is the key to interior
pest control. We estimate that >95% of the insects encountered
within a building originate and live outdoors. If you can keep them
out with window screens, air curtains above doorways, weather-stripping
on the base of exit doors, etc., you will have relatively few pest
issues. We also use caulking to seal cracks and crevices in kitchens
to eliminate cockroach shelter. Sanitation is another key to maintaining
a facility pest-free. If you can eliminate the habitat (debris) that
the insects like to feed on and breed in, than you will have a positively
effect on the level pest activity within an area. |

|
|
What type
of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend? |
|
What do
you usually use/sell/recommend for addressing: |
|
termites |
this is not our area of expertise however,
we have an agreement with another pest control company to provide
termite control for our clients that have termite infestations. |
|
fleas |
fleas are not generally a problem in our
accounts |
|
ants (indoor) |
ants are now
the number #1 pest in the US. We currently utilize a baiting program
using protein or sugar based baits to achieve control. Our biggest
problem with ants, is that the client wants to see immediate results.
When you use baits, the time to achieve results can run several weeks,
however, the control is longer lasting. |
|
How do
you evaluate effectiveness of your pest management |
|
We
utilize thousands of insect monitors to identify problems before they
escalate. The sticky traps can also track population levels and effectiveness
of treatments. We also have two full time supervisors that routinely
inspect our clients' facilities to assure that the program we design
is being maintained properly by our service staff. |
