We recommend
and sell over 80 different products, natural minerals and fertilizers,
non toxic alternatives for pest control, and various biological soil
amendments and inoculants. Our business offers consulting and soil
testing if needed for most all food crops (grain, vegetable, fruit,
specialty). |
|
What
is your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? |
|
Using the knowledge
and techniques to successfully restore health to plants or encourage
healthy crops and encourage predator insect presence, thus overcoming
pests and disease. |
|
Is pest management performed on a specific schedule? |
|
Scheduling is
crop specific. Specialty crops could be monitored but we advise treatment
before infestation of an unhealthy crop. |
|
How
are pest problems identified? |
|
Good observation
and knowledge of which plant-eating insects attack which crop. We
also monitor the "brix" sugar reading of the plants. A low
"brix" plant is more open to attack. Pest population counts
can be taken before using alternative controls, but it is best to
foliar feed the plant to improve its health. |
|
What practices
do you use to prevent and/or control pests? |
|
We use minerals,
soil amendments etc., coupled with plant health manipulation using
foliar feeding. |
|
Do you
use biological controls? |
|
Do you
use synthetic chemicals? |
|
We don't recommend
them but if the customers insist, we encourage ways to reduce usage. |
|
What
are the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend? |
|
We promote all
natural, non-chemicals that are not toxic. Hot pepper wax, diatomaceous
earth, black molasses, garlic, fish, seaweed, etc. |
|
If pesticides are used, how much are used per year of each? |
|
Where the customer
prefers to use some chemical pesticide, we reduced use by 25% last
year. |
|
Does
your company perform habitat modification? |
|
Yes. We recommend
rotation of alternative crops to help break up the weed, insect and
disease cycles. |
|
Do you
use any physical or mechanical controls? |
|
Yes. For weeds
- soil cultivation, mowing and flamer. For weeds, insects and disease
- balance and application of minerals, promote green manures, composts
and animal manures, promote residue treatments (sheet composting). |
|
What
type of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend? |
|
We use composted
manures, natural minerals (high calcium lime, soft rock phosphae,
gypsum, etc.), alfalfa based fertilizers, clean hot mix solutions,
trace minerals, seaweed complexes, fish fertilzers, and dry water
soluble fertilizers. |

Grainbugs - DE; Most soft body eaters - hot pepper wax and garlic oils. |
|
How do
you evaluate effectiveness of your pest management |
|
We have experienced
very good control with the use of alternatives on crop insect control. |
