What
is your definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? |
|
We
use OPM - Organic Pest Management - the natural form of IPM. We provide
soil testing, use of amendments/fertilizers, pruning and natural weed
control (all cultural practices) before the use of organic pesticides
(such as beneficial insect release, Bt followed by pesticides made
with organic derivatives) |
|
Is pest management performed on a specific schedule? |
|
Spring
and late spring applications of corn gluten to reduce crab grass (weeds).
Summer releases of nematodes to control various grubs (lawn care)
and black vine weeval (landscape care). |
|
How
are pest problems identified? |
|
We
use a 30X scope to check the emergence of hemlock wooly aldegids from
the cotton white egg satches and use various Delta Wing Traps (sticky
traps) as well as various colored sticky traps (white, blue, red and
yellow) to catch and hold insects for identification. |
|
What practices
do you use to prevent and/or control pests? |
|
We
use temperature Degree Day's (TDD) to monitor insect incubation/emergence. |
|
Do you
use biological controls? |
|
Do you
use synthetic chemicals? |
|
What
are the top 10 pesticides you use/sell/recommend? |
|
Corn
gluten, Bt, nematodes, pyrethrum,
rotenone, vegetable based horticultural oil, horticultural soaps,
garlic, hot pepper and diatomaceous earth. |
|
If pesticides are used, how much are used per year of each? |
|
Spot treatments
by hand operated equipment to reduce drift. All pesticides used are
non chemical and 100% organic. |
|
Does
your company perform habitat modification? |
|
Pruning
shrubs away from the house (foundation planting) to reduce insect
entry to homes; installation of bat houses. |
|
Do you
use any physical or mechanical controls? |
|
We
use a device called a weed hound to extract broadleaf weeds from the
earth. |
|
What
type of fertilizers do you use/sell/recommend? |
|
Composted
poultry manure, fish emulsion, seaweed, compost teas, green sand,
iron, gypsum, sulfur, corn gluten. |
|
What
do you usually use/sell/recommend for addressing: |
|
dandelions |
Weed
Hound (mechanical) |
|
other |
for
grubs we use nematodes |
|
How do
you evaluate effectiveness of your pest management |
|
In
10 years of operation we never needed chemical controls for insect
or fungus control on lawns and landscape planting. We rate our programs
an 8-9 out of 10. |
